Nakano Ward is located west of Shinjuku and combines the convenience of being close to the city center with a relaxed living environment. Around Nakano Station, you’ll find many commercial facilities and shopping streets, making it easy to access daily necessities within walking distance.

On the other hand, moving slightly away from the station reveals quiet residential areas, which are popular with a wide range of residents—from single professionals to families. In recent years, redevelopment projects have progressed, increasing Nakano’s appeal both as a place to live and a place to visit.

A livable area with excellent access to the city center

Nakano Ward is served by multiple train lines, including the JR Chūō Line, JR Sōbu Line, Tokyo Metro Tōzai Line, and Seibu Shinjuku Line. Shinjuku is only about five minutes away by train, offering outstanding access to central Tokyo.

While commuting and attending school is very convenient, the area around the station is also well equipped with supermarkets, hospitals, schools, and parks, providing a comfortable living environment. Despite its proximity to the city center, Nakano offers a relatively calm lifestyle, which is one of its biggest attractions.

A town where subculture and everyday life coexist

Nakano is widely known across Japan as a center of subculture, especially around Nakano Broadway. Shops specializing in anime, manga, figurines, vintage clothing, and other niche interests attract fans from both Japan and abroad.

At the same time, the area is home to many traditional shopping streets and locally rooted businesses that support residents’ everyday lives. This natural coexistence of a tourist destination and a residential community is one of Nakano’s defining characteristics.

Plenty of dining options and a rich eating-out scene

Around Nakano Station, there is a wide variety of restaurants, including ramen shops, izakayas, casual diners, and cafés, offering an abundance of choices for eating out. Many are independently run establishments known for good quality at reasonable prices, earning Nakano a reputation as a place for “cheap and delicious” food.

Whether it’s grabbing a drink after work or enjoying a food crawl on the weekend, Nakano’s vibrant dining scene caters to many different occasions and is another major draw of the area.

Nakano Broadway is a pioneering mixed-use commercial and residential complex that opened in 1966 during Japan’s period of rapid economic growth. ” At the same time, long-established, community-based shops remain, allowing diverse cultures to coexist. In recent years, more venture-style stores have opened, giving Nakano Broadway its uniquely chaotic and captivating atmosphere.

Araiyakushi Baishōin is the only pilgrimage temple in Nakano Ward and belongs to the Shingon Buzan school.

Its principal object of worship is a golden statue that combines two deities: Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha) and Nyoirin Kannon. This statue once served as the guardian deity of the Nitta clan, a prominent samurai family during the Kamakura period. Amid the wars from the Kamakura to the Nanboku-chō period, the statue was lost, but it was rediscovered in 1586 (Tenshō 14) inside a hole in a plum tree. The temple is said to have been newly established to enshrine it.

Within the grounds stands the Araiyakushi Reconstruction Memorial Tower, built in 1779 by the successor priest Eishun in honor of the achievements of Priest Unju, who devoted himself to rebuilding the temple, and in response to the faith of its followers.

Baishōin is also known as the “Eye-Healing Yakushi,” as Lady Kazuko, daughter of the second Tokugawa shogun Hidetada, is said to have regained her sight after praying to Yakushi Nyorai here. Temple fairs are held on days ending in 8 each month, drawing lively crowds. The temple is also the 71st stop on the Gofunai 88-Temple Pilgrimage.
